I see it from my window, or when I'm out on the street. Someone, usually a young man ripping open garbage bags, rifling through the insides. It happens all the time and it makes me uncomfortable.

  1. I suppose you can salvage some good stuff, depending on the tenants.
But I always feel that opening of garbage bags in somehow an invasion of privacy.

  4. Identity theft is terrifying. But the guy in my photo (& all the people I've seen do this) is only looking for food or an object that he could re-purpose or put to use. It's the impoverished version of the 'dumpster diving' that happens in the US.

  5. Here people leave bread leftovers in a clean bag tied to their garbage bin or to a tree for anyone who needs it, people or animals. And if they throw away clothes, they put them in an open bag next to or on top of the bin, easily visible.

  6. Dina, I like that.
I've read different articles about dumpster diving in the US and I have to say that I find comfort that things that one person is done using find another home for further use. The US throws away a staggering amount of food and otherwise usable items clogging the landfills with items that will take years or decades to decompose. It is a sad thing to see people who "need" to dumpster dive to survive and I wish they had other options as well.
At the very least this man is opening the bags and will aid in the decomposition of it's contents.
